符 · A field guide to Fuguro

The Japanese app we
wished existed.

Most people don't quit Japanese because it's hard. They quit because they forget faster than they learn, the flashcards never turn into real sentences, and the grind wears thin. Fuguro is one road, built end to end, to fix exactly those three things.

What it truly is

Not a flashcard app.
A road with a destination.

Fuguro is not a deck of flashcards, and it's not a textbook. It's a single road laid end to end, from the first sound you can't yet read to the first sentence you can. No menu of disconnected courses. No guessing what to study next. One ordered path, and a clear next step every time you open it.

Every character you learn becomes a 符: a small token, earned and kept, that comes back to you exactly when your memory is about to let it slip. Collect enough of them, in the right order, and one day the road quietly turns into reading.

継続は力なりSteady effort, made easy to repeat, is the whole secret. We just built the road so the steps fall in the right places.
Why it exists

Three ways people lose Japanese.

Almost everyone who stops quits for one of these reasons. Fuguro was shaped, from the ground up, around all three.

  1. 01

    The forgetting

You can finish a hundred lessons and lose most of them inside a week. Without something timing reviews to your actual memory, learning leaks out as fast as it pours in.

  2. 02

    The wall

Knowing a word on a card and reading it inside a sentence are different skills. Most apps train only the first one, so real Japanese stays just out of reach behind a wall.

  3. 03

    The boredom

A streak only counts while you keep it. Drilling the same way every single day is the surest way to stop, so practice has to be something you actually want to open.

What's actually inside

No magic. Just the parts that work.

Everything below is in the app today. We'd rather under-promise here than have you find out later.

One path, two phases

Phase I, Kana Awakening: every hiragana and katakana sound across 9 short levels (92 characters). Phase II, Core Ascent: 75 themed stages of the most common kanji and vocabulary, 1,500+ items in all. Already read kana? Skip ahead and start straight at Core.

Reviews timed to your memory

You learn an item once, properly, with its meaning, reading and audio. It then returns on a spaced schedule of hours, then days, then weeks, and each correct answer promotes it through five ranks: Recruit to Immortal.

A reading bunkō

Guided short stories built mostly from words you've already drilled. Tap any word for its reading and meaning, toggle furigana on or off, and read at your own pace. Reading opens in Phase II, across nineteen themed chapters.

Eight arcade games

Kana Match, Kana Sprint and Listen Up for Phase I; Word Snap, Vocab Blitz, Word Recall, Sentence Slot and Reading Race for Phase II. Short, fast rounds that turn daily reps into something you'll come back to.

Audio on every item

Every character and word ships with audio you can play, so the sound is part of the memory from the very first time you meet it, not something you bolt on later.

Your pace, your settings

Set a daily goal, advance a level only when you're ready rather than on a forced timer, switch between light and dark, and pick up exactly where you left off. Nothing here punishes a slower week.

The approach

Three ideas, nothing exotic.

Fuguro doesn't claim a secret method. It just commits, fully, to three things that are well understood and usually done half-heartedly.

01

Spaced repetition

Show each item right as it's about to fade, not on a fixed daily dump. Effort goes only where memory is actually at risk.

02

Comprehensible input

Read text built from words you mostly know. That's the bridge from recognising a card to reading a sentence, so we built it in, not as an afterthought.

03

Low-friction habit

The best method only works if you keep showing up. Quick games and a clear next step make the daily return the easy choice.
